The masterclasses of the Philadelphia Short Film Festival are designed to provide in-depth training and skills improvement opportunities for professionals in the film industry. For this festival, we have invited many of the most professional filmmakers and experts in the industry to bring advanced courses on directing, screenwriting, filmmaking, etc. Each masterclass provides participants with the opportunity to meet with the masters face to face and gain an in-depth understanding of the thinking and techniques behind the creation.

From Script to Screen - The Complete Screenwriting Process

Instructor: Laura Thompson (screenwriter, creator of multiple films and TV series)

Introduction:

As a screenwriter, how do you develop an idea into a complete script? In this master class, Laura Thompson will lead participants through the entire process of screenwriting, from conception, character creation to dialogue creation, so that you can better understand how to create an attractive script.

Laura Thompson

Clara Mendoza, a senior director and screenwriter from Argentina, has more than 20 years of filmmaking experience. She is good at using film language to explore complex interpersonal relationships and social issues. Her works have been shortlisted and won awards at many international film festivals. Clara's film style is unique and is known for its delicate narrative and profound character creation. In the master class, she will share how to integrate personal perspectives into narrative structure and the skills of shaping real characters to help students create fascinating stories.

Kevin Lin

Michael O'Connor, a well-known British cinematographer, is widely praised for his superb use of light and shadow and highly emotional visual style. He has participated in the shooting of many award-winning films, and his works span multiple fields such as feature films, documentaries and short films. In the master class, Michael will focus on teaching photography techniques, including how to express emotions through the lens, use light to create atmosphere, and how to achieve high-quality visual effects with limited resources.
